How To Do It

Step 1: Choose a type

On the widget creation wizard homepage, please select the type of widget you want, either a search form, or a list of jobs, and click on the orange button beneath your choice. You will then be taken to the create widget page.

If you change your mind, you can go back and select the other type of widget at the top of the page.

Step 2: Customise your widget

The create widget page is divided into two sections; the preview area on the left hand side and the control panel area on the right.

Depending on which widget you selected, you will see the controls you can use to adjust how the widget looks in the panel on the right.

Any changes you make will be shown immediately in the preview panel on the left. What you see on the left is what you will get when you click on the "get the code" button.

Step 3: Press the "get the code" button

When you are happy with your customised widget, press the "get the code" button at the bottom of the right hand panel.

If you want to start again or go back to the default theme, you can click the "Revert to default" link in the top right hand corner of the control panel on the right.

Step 4: Copy and paste the code and you’re done.

Pressing the "get the code" button will give you the final code for your widget. Click on the "select all & copy" button to copy the code to your clipboard. Open the source code to your site or blog, and paste the widget code where you want it to appear.

If you decide you want to make more changes, you can do this by clicking the "back" link at the bottom of the right hand panel.

What is a widget?: A web widget is a small piece of code you can install on your website or blog. It allows you to add content or functionality from other websites into your own personal site to make your pages more relevant and useful for your visitors.

Why should I get one?: Adding widgets to your web pages is an easy way to help make your site more useful and valuable to your users, with little or no programming knowledge needed.

Is this really free? What's the catch?: There's no catch, really. The code you place on your site links back to totaljobs.com and helps you offer more service and information to your users.

What widgets are available?

We offer two different widgets: job search and job results.

The job search widget lets your visitors search for jobs on totaljobs.com directly from your site.
The job results widget will display the latest jobs from totaljobs.com, with the results customised to your specifications so you can show highly targeted content that is useful for your visitors. E.g. If your web site is a blog about architecture, you can choose to show only architecture jobs in a location of your choice.

Can I use both on my site?: Yep! Just create one of each and place both bits of code on your site.

How do I add the widget to my site?: The widget creation wizard will provide a small snippet of code, which you simply need to copy and paste into the source code of the web page where you want the widget to appear.
If you use a blogging platform like Blogger, Wordpress, or TypePad, each has a way of adding HTML or Javascript into your pages. See the help section for your particular platform for more information.

I don't know HTML, can I still use this?: If you run your own website, you will need to know a little bit of HTML to add the widget to your pages. If you have a webmaster who manages your site, you should talk with him/her about adding the widget code.
If you use a blogging platform like Blogger, Wordpress, or TypePad, each has a way of adding widgets into your blog by simply copying/pasting the code we provide into an HTML/Javascript box. See the help section for your particular platform for more information.

I placed the code on my site but still can't see anything.: The results and search widgets do require a JavaScript-enabled browser to display correctly. If JavaScript is disabled, you may not see any results but should still see a bit of placeholder text linking to totaljobs.com.
If you see nothing at all, or your page is displaying source code, double check that your widget code was copied correctly by comparing the code on your site against the code provided by the wizard. You might find it useful to simply re-create the widget code and try again.

Will a job widget help my site rank higher in Google?: Search engines like pages with fresh content, but we can't make promise that just adding one of our widgets to your page will help.

How much customisation I can do on the widgets?

We've tried to make it as easy as possible for you to create a widget that works well with your own website. Almost everything is customisable so you can closely match the look and feel of the page where the widget will appear.

You can change:

The Font face.
Each individual widget uses one font type only (e.g. Arial or Trebuchet). Selecting a different font would apply to the whole content element of the widget. The default font is Arial.
The colour of the main title, labels, and the instructional text.
The background colour
The size and shape of the widget
The size and colour of the border - including having no border at all
On the job results widget - the type of jobs shown and their location

What you cannot change:

The actual text displayed
Font size and font style
You can't make the font bigger or smaller, nor can you turn the bold or italic ones regular or vice versa.
The footer
All we ask in trade for these widgets is a little bit of branding - "powered by totaljobs.com" will always appear at the bottom on a white background.

On the job results widget, what happens if I leave the keyword blank?: By default, the results will list the latest jobs submitted to totaljobs.com in all locations, industries, and job types.

What if my keyword doesn't give any results?: If the keyword you've used doesn't return any results, we'll display a short message to let you know. You might want to try changing your keywords or locations to be less specific, but most of the time results should be available and be displayed on your widget.

On the job search widget, what happens if I click 'search' without any keyword or location?: An empty search will return a listing of all jobs at totaljobs.com, sorted by the most recent listing.

I changed the styles but now think I prefer the default theme.: Just click the "revert to the default theme" link at the top right of the widget creation widget. Please bear in mind that you can't undo this action; you will need to customise your widget all over again.

How do I edit the widget or change the settings?: The easiest way to edit the settings on your widget is to simply create a new one and replace the code on your site - you can do this as many times as you want.

How do I remove the widget from my site?: To remove the widget you just need to remove the code from your page.
